ARNOLD SCHWARTZMAN (1936- )

Arnold Schwartzman is an Oscar winning documentary filmmaker and noted graphic designer. He and his wife Isolde moved from London to Hollywood in 1978, where they collaborate on film and book projects.

Born in London, England in 1936, Schwartzman began his career in television producing such innovative work as his title designs for "Ready, Steady, Go!" An illustrator for many years for the Sunday Times, he was for several years an advertising agency art director and producer, where he produced award winning commercials and print campaigns for Coca-Cola, etc. he later directed commercials, and in 1969 he joined the board of Conran Design.

In 1965, in a lead article about Schwartzman, the Sunday Times wrote: "He is in his particular world a trend-setter" One of a generation of young directors and artists changing the pattern of television? in 1973, the IMAGE magazine wrote: "Arnold Schwartzman is 36, and has so far done the work of four lifetimes. His career in design and the graphic arts is phenomenal. Phenomenal not only as a success story, but because of the influence he has in our everyday life. Where there's an image, there's a Schwartzman."

In 1974, Schwartzman was elected to the Alliance Graphique Internationale. In 1982, he was appointed the Director of Design for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

"Liberation" is Schwartzman's third feature length documentary for the Simon Wiesenthal Center. His first, "GENOCIDE," won him an Academy Award¢ç in 1981, followed by "ECHOES THAT REMAIN" in 1991, which received the 1992 Houston International Film Festival Gold Special Jury Award.

Among his recently published books are "GRAVEN IMAGES" (1993); "PHONOGRAPHICS" (1993); "CODE NAME: THE LONG SOBBING" (1994) - the companion to the film "LIBERATION"; and "ANGLAFILE: the Best of British in Los Angeles" (1994).

Mr. Schwartzman is a member of the boards of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Los Angeles (BAFTA LA), the Documentary Executive Committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Western Region Board of London's Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and is the Chairman of the International Outreach Committee of the Motion Picture Centennial Committee.
