Suguru Ishizaki is assistant professor of communication design at the school of
design, Carnegie Mellon University. He teaches communication design and design
for digital and interactive media. His research addresses communication methods
that are unique to digital media, particularly focusing on kinetic typography an

d visualization of complex information. His professional work includes
interaction design, software development consulting, interactive diagramming,
and print design. B.A in Design, University of Tsukuba, Japan; M.S., Ph.D,
Media Laboratory, MIT.

My current project focuses on the expressive power of typography that is
presented over time. Written language is no longer limited to static forms in
digital communication. Typographic form can change in size, color, or position
over time to help express its content. For instance, adding small vertical
vibration to the word ¡°help¡± may convey a sense of urgency. A quick serial
display of text using small light-weight type may represent a whispering voice.
I have created a ¡°writing tool¡±called Wigglet, which allows ordinary people
to produce temporally expressive messages-or kinetic typography. Using wigglet
has shown that ordinary people can create expressive messages beyond the static
smilies :-) I have also been developing and designing on-line environments where

people can exchange kinetic messages either synchronously or asynchronously.
Using these experimental environments, I am interested in discovering how this
new form of writing changes the way language is used and how temporal forms
relate to message content.

In my presentation, I will first introduce what kinetic typography is, and
situate it in historical context of visual communication design. Then, I will
discuss design principles associated with kinetic typography I have discovered
so far, I will also demonstrate Wigglet, a tool for writing kinetic messages for
everybody, and discuss how kinetic typography, which was originally accessible
only to the professional designers, can be used by ordinary people in their
everyday context.
